Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) Contact Lenses

When soft contact lenses do not work, Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) contact lenses may be an option for some patients. The Summit Eyecare doctors are experts in determining the best solution. Unlike the now obsolete hard contact lenses of time past, RGP lenses are made of durable plastic that transmit oxygen to the cornea.

Advantages

There are some advantages of RGP contact lenses over soft contact lenses. These include:

  1. In most cases, RGP contact lenses allow more oxygen to reach the cornea.
  2. RGP lenses typically provide more clear vision.
  3. The RGP contact lenses are more durable than soft contact lenses which can tear and fold easily.
  4. Because the RGP contact lenses are more durable, they last longer and ultimately cost less in the long run.
  5. Can be used to correct vision problems like corneal refractive therapy and to control myopia.

Disadvantages

One of the main disadvantages of RGP contact lenses is that they are not immediately comfortable as soft contact lenses. Other disadvantages include:

  1. In most cases, RGP contact lenses allow more oxygen to reach the cornea.
  2. RGP contact lenses are smaller and are more likely to be dislodged during athletic or other activities.
  3. The RGP contact lenses are more durable than soft contact lenses which can tear and fold easily.
  4. By design, the RGP lenses move during a normal blink which increase the risk of dust getting under the lens.
