Understanding Dry Eye
Dry eye is caused by insufficient lubrication and can result inflammation and vision loss. Its symptoms include a burning sensation, visible redness, and sensitivity to bright light. Its causes can range from aging to the use of certain medications. However, the leading cause of dry eyes is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction. This condition occurs when the tiny meibomian glands located at the edges of the eyelids fail to function. Our eye doctor will assess your eyes to determine what is causing your dry eyes and if LipiFlow is right for you.
How LipiFlow Works
LipiFlow treatment involves the use of a device that combines heat and gentle pressure to remove meibomian gland blockage. The device is shaped to avoid direct contact with the cornea, the invisible covering of the front of the eyeball, and functions in such a manner to avoid any harm to surrounding areas. Patients who have undergone it described the treatment as a "gentle massage" of the eyelids. The treatment can be accomplished in a single office visit, and usually takes between ten and fifteen minutes. Patients will usually feel its maximum benefits within a period of two months or less. The effects of the treatment can last for up to two years.
