If you have any refractive errors, you will need eyeglasses or contact lenses to see clearly. Many people can wear conventional contact lenses. However, certain conditions of the eye make this impossible, and you will need specialty lenses prescribed by an eye doctor. At Summit Eyecare, our optometrist has years of experience fitting residents of Idaho Falls, Merlin, Pancheri, Pocatello, St. Anthony, and Rexburg for specialty contact lenses.

Dry Eye Syndrome

Dry eye occurs when your eyes don't produce enough natural tears to keep your eyes lubricated. It can also occur if the tears you produce are of poor quality and evaporate before they can lubricate your eyes. Conventional soft lenses absorb moisture from your eyes throughout the day, which can make your dry eye symptoms worse. If you have a dry eye, gas permeable lenses are a good option because they don't absorb moisture. Scleral contacts rest on the white of your eye and vault over your cornea, which is another good option.

Astigmatism

Because astigmatism is characterized by abnormal curvatures of the cornea, conventional lenses won't correct your vision properly. Our eye doctor may prescribe a toric lens that will allow you to see clearly at all distances.

Presbyopia

Presbyopia is a condition that occurs around the age of 40. It occurs when your eye's lens loses its elasticity, making it difficult to see close-up objects. If you are nearsighted, you will need bifocal contacts. These lenses contain two prescriptions, one for distance and one for a close vision, allowing you to see clearly at all distances.

Keratoconus

Keratoconus occurs when your cornea isn't strong enough to hold its round shape, causing it to bulge. Because your cornea is misshapen, conventional soft lenses aren't an option. Gas permeable contacts are rigid and will help hold your eye's round shape. Because scleral contacts don't rest on the cornea, they are also a good option.

Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis

This is a chronic form of conjunctivitis that causes red bumps to form under the eyelid. Because protein builds up on soft lenses, it will make your symptoms worse. Protein deposits don't build up on gas-permeable lenses the way it does with soft lenses, they are an excellent option. Scleral lenses can also be prescribed if you have this condition.
