Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis, commonly referred to as "pink eye", is classified as the inflammation of the conjunctiva in the eye. The conjunctiva is the thin membrane covering the whites of the eyes, located inside the eyelids themselves. Colds, respiratory infections, allergens, and even bacteria (including Streptococcus and Staphylococcus) can lead to a conjunctivitis infection.

Treatments for conjunctivitis may include cold compresses, ointments, and even artificial tears as the infection heals.

Keratitis

Keratitis occurs due to inflammation of the cornea of the eye. The cornea of the eye is the dome-shaped top surface of the eye itself. Keratitis is often triggered by the herpes simplex virus, but can also result from traumatic eye injuries, fungus, and bacteria that have come in contact with the eyes.

The symptoms of keratitis include light sensitivity, blurred vision, and pain in the eyes. In severe cases, individuals may also experience discharge from the affected eye(s). Treatments for keratitis include antifungal medications, antiviral treatments, and antibiotic eye drops.

Blepharitis

Blepharitis causes severe inflammation of the margins of the eyelids. This condition is typically triggered by underlying seborrheic dermatitis or, in some cases, a bacterial infection. Symptoms of blepharitis include crusting around the eyelashes, burning and itching eyes, and swollen, red eyelids.

Treating blepharitis is possible by using warm compresses and by rinsing the affected eyes with warm water. In some instances, it may be necessary to use anti-inflammatory ointments or antibiotics to eliminate blepharitis entirely.
